Life at BAE Systems
Developing individuals
We pride ourselves on employing talented individuals, right across BAE Systems. And then we go on to make them even better.
Our employees have turned dreams, like a supersonic aircraft and vertical take-off fighter, into reality – and they still learn something new every day.
Whether your chosen discipline is engineering, manufacturing, project management, IT, finance or HR, you can expect daily opportunities to learn and develop your skills. Your manager will help you focus on your department and role from your first day with us. Within a month, you’ll attend an induction event. And then the progress starts in earnest. Formal training and learning includes:
· ‘Developing You’ Frameworks – Each major business function has robust frameworks in place to define the competencies and knowledge it needs to excel. For instance, our ‘Engineering Developing You’ framework provides the basis for training and development solutions across six core engineering disciplines in a way that balances individual career aspirations with business need. Crucially, these are frameworks that are as applicable to graduates as they are to directors.
· Personal Development Reviews (PDR) – These take place at least twice a year and help you take stock of your job, your current skills and your recent achievements. More to the point, this is the time for you to map out your plans for the future and decide how best to work to the objectives you agree with your manager during the review. Your PDRs will put you at the centre of your own progress – just the way it should be.
· Intelligent Learning – To support your personal, functional and leadership & management growth, we’re pioneering the use of an online Intelligent Learning Portal. This offers easy access to more than 400 e-courses at your desk, at your nearest Learning Resource Centre or even at home. Better still; all courses are available to your family members, free of charge, so you can even get your loved ones involved.
· Skills Programmes – Our success depends on having the right skills in every area of the business, which is why we operate a wide variety of specific programmes to develop particular capabilities and skillsets.
Developing leaders
In every area of our business, we recognise the need for strong, focused leadership to maintain our position at the sharp end of our industry. As such, we constantly strive to help existing and future leaders get the best out of themselves.
Each individual’s development is divided into three core areas: Personal; Functional; and Learning & Management (L&M). Within L&M, we have established a Performance Centred Leadership (PCL) framework, which covers function-specific and business-wide leadership development programmes.
The aim of PCL is to contribute to our high-performance culture, ensuring every one of our leaders is equipped to find the knowledge to deal with customers, manage suppliers and develop people across the organisation. As such, it’s a framework with a direct positive impact on our overall performance – an initiative that clearly demonstrates the way we align individual aspirations with business requirements to everyone’s benefit.
Supporting communities
Charities, schools and not-for-profit organisations make a hugely valuable contribution to society. We support their work through donations and sponsorships, by encouraging employees to share their time and expertise as volunteers and by supporting employee fundraising.
Supporting the armed forces
Members of the armed forces have a challenging and often dangerous job to do. As well as designing our products to protect service personnel in the field, we also support their work through charitable donations and sponsorships, employee volunteering and by sharing our expertise.
Volunteering and fundraising
Where possible, volunteering is integrated into formal career development programmes. Examples include, running a careers advice session at a local school or providing health and safety training for a local charity.
Employees are also regularly involved in a range of individual or team volunteering projects, such as helping out in local schools and packing Christmas boxes for injured armed forces personnel and their families.
